Global Stage Hollywood 2026 opened on October 2 at the TCL Chinese Theatre with the international screening of 90 Meters, starring Soma Yamaji and Miho Kanno. Kanno and co-star Nanase Nishino walked the red carpet and joined the audience for a post-screening stage greeting.
Written and directed by Shun Nakagawa and drawn from his own experience caring for his mother, 90 Meters follows Yu (Yamaji), a high school student at a turning point, and his mother Misaki (Kanno), a single parent with a serious illness. Nishino plays Kaori Shimomura, Misaki's care manager. The film was released in Japan in March and is now available on Blu-ray and DVD.
Festival Director Yumi Montgomery on the selection: "It carefully depicts the complex yet loving relationship between a mother and son who support each other in harsh circumstances. The performances of all the cast members were also wonderful."
Roughly 150 guests attended the English-subtitled screening, which closed to sustained applause. Director Nakagawa, unable to travel, sent a message comparing his two leads' star power in Japan to that of Shohei Ohtani and Rui Hachimura in LA.
On stage, Kanno described researching her role through articles and documentaries and working with a trainer to lose weight. Nishino said acting alongside Kanno was something she had long hoped for, and that she found the film moving in new places on this viewing. Kanno reflected that the Hollywood audience's response confirmed for her that "a parent's love for their child is universal."
